Behind the Scenes of the Trump Trial: Stormy Daniels Takes the Stand

Donald Trump

Stormy Daniels, an adult film actress, has become a central figure in the criminal trial against Donald Trump, who was President of the United States from 2017 to 2021 and is now a Republican candidate in the upcoming presidential election. The trial, which began on April 15 in New York, revolves around a case that was revealed in 2018 by the Wall Street Journal. According to the newspaper, Trump’s lawyer paid $130,000 (about 122,000 euros) to Daniels to silence her about a sexual relationship she claims to have had with Trump in 2006, which Trump denies.

Ten years after the alleged events, Trump, then host of the show “The Apprentice”, decided to run for presidency against Hillary Clinton. At that time, it seems he deemed it necessary to do some cleaning up in his carefree billionaire past. According to a Wall Street Journal article published in 2018, Michael Cohen, the personal lawyer of the Republican candidate, paid $130,000 to Stephanie Clifford (Stormy Daniels’ real name) in exchange for her silence about her sexual relationship with Trump. Cohen admitted in 2018 to having made this payment.

The trial does not directly oppose Daniels to Trump. The case, titled “The People of the State of New York vs. Donald J. Trump”, was filed by the district attorney, Alvin Bragg. In this case, Trump is charged with 34 accounting frauds, including the alleged falsification of documents used to conceal the payment to Daniels. He is also accused of having doctored the accounts of his real estate group, the Trump Organization, to reimburse Cohen. These frauds can lead to a maximum sentence of four years in prison in the most serious cases.
